Our custom heavy-duty steel base plates are manufactured exactly to your project drawings-covering non-standard dimensions, multi-standard material grades (ASTM/EN/GB/JIS), project-specific anchor bolt hole patterns, stiffener configurations, and surface treatment schemes tailored to the service environment. Every batch of base plates is delivered with complete MTC material certificates, AWS D1.1 welding compliance records, and third-party inspection support.

What Are Custom Heavy-Duty Steel Base Plates?
Custom heavy-duty steel base plates are thick, precision-fabricated steel plates that serve as the critical load-transfer interface between structural steel columns and concrete foundations. Unlike thin standard base plates (10-25mm), heavy-duty plates range from 40mm to over 120mm in thickness, engineered to transfer massive axial loads, high shear forces, and significant bending moments from the column to the foundation without failure.
In a structural system, the base plate performs three simultaneous functions:
| Function | How It Works | Failure If Absent |
|---|---|---|
| Load Distribution | Spreads concentrated column axial force over a larger concrete bearing area, reducing bearing stress to below concrete design strength | Concrete crushing, foundation settlement, column instability |
| Moment Resistance | With anchor bolts, forms a force couple: compression on one side (bearing against concrete), tension on the other (anchor bolts in uplift), resisting bending moment | Column base rotation, structural drift, connection failure |
| Shear Transfer | Transfers horizontal shear from column to foundation via friction between plate and grout/concrete, or via welded shear keys for high shear loads | Column base sliding, shear failure at connection |
Types of Custom Base Plates We Produce
| Type | Description | Typical Thickness | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat Base Plate | Single flat plate with anchor bolt holes, no stiffeners. Simplest design for axial load with minimal moment. | 20-50mm | Light to medium columns, interior posts, equipment bases |
| Stiffened Base Plate | Flat plate with vertical stiffener plates (gussets) welded between column flanges and base plate. Increases effective bending resistance, allows thinner plate or higher moment capacity. | 30-80mm | High-rise columns, wind-loaded frames, seismic moment frames |
| Embedded Base Plate | Plate cast into concrete foundation with anchor bolts and shear keys. Maximum fixity and moment transfer. | 40-100mm | Seismic zones, high-moment connections, bridge piers |
| Anchor Plate Base | Thick plate with through-bolts connecting to embedded anchor plates in foundation. Used for very high uplift forces. | 50-120mm | Transmission towers, wind turbine bases, tall sign structures / |
| Grouted Base Plate | Plate set on non-shrink grout layer between plate and concrete. Improves bearing uniformity and allows leveling adjustment. | 25-80mm | Industrial machinery, pre-engineered buildings, column base retrofits |
Applications of Steel Base Plates
High-Rise Buildings: Primary base plates for massive structural steel columns.
Industrial Plants & Refineries : Heavy-duty mounting plates for vibration-prone machinery and structures.
Infrastructure Projects: Bridge pier connection plates and highway signage foundations.
Warehouse Racking: Large-scale distribution center upright base supports.

Packing & Shipping of Custom Base Plates
Surface Protection: Anti-rust oil is applied, with anti-rust paper or plastic film added as a moisture barrier.
Dunnage Support: Timber blocks or purpose-made steel-wood cradles are placed underneath to keep the plates elevated, preventing moisture damage from ground water.
External Bundling: High-tensile packing steel straps are applied in criss-cross patterns, with edge protectors at corners to prevent scratching.
Anti-Shift Securing: Ratchet straps, anti-slip pads, or wooden wedges secure the base plates in the vehicle to prevent sliding during sudden braking.
FAQ
Q: What drawing formats do you accept?
A: DWG, DXF, STEP, IGES, and PDF. Our CAD/CAM system supports direct conversion to CNC machine code. Hand-drawn sketches with dimensions are also acceptable for initial quotation.
Q: Do you provide MTC with shipments?
A: Yes. Every shipment includes Mill Test Certificate per EN 10204 3.1 (standard) or 3.2 (third-party verified by BV/SGS/TUV, upon request). MTC documents chemical composition and mechanical properties traceable to heat number.
Q: Can you arrange third-party pre-shipment inspection?
A: Yes. We regularly work with SGS, Bureau Veritas, and TUV for pre-shipment inspection at our facility. PSI covers dimensional verification, weld NDT, surface treatment, packing, and document review. Inspection report is issued before container loading.
